Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth or dental implant. It serves multiple purposes, including protecting a cracked, decayed, or broken tooth, covering a dental implant, concealing a severely discolored tooth, or safeguarding a tooth that has undergone a root canal. At Leland Wommack DDS, we offer dental crowns crafted from a variety of materials, including gold, metal, ceramic, porcelain, and resin.

The Dental Crown Procedure

Typically, obtaining a dental crown involves two visits to the dentist's office. During the initial visit, your dentist will prepare your tooth for the crown by carefully reducing the enamel's size to accommodate the crown. Subsequently, an impression of your tooth will be taken and sent to a lab where the permanent crown will be meticulously crafted. Before you leave, a temporary crown will be placed over your tooth to shield it until the permanent crown is ready.

On your second visit, the temporary crown will be removed, and the permanent crown will be securely positioned on your tooth. Before you depart, your dentist will ensure that your bite feels comfortable, and the crown aligns correctly.

The Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns, often referred to as caps, are restorations typically made from porcelain or ceramic. They are designed to fully encase a tooth, reinstating its original shape and size. Crowns are versatile and can be used to repair teeth that are fractured, damaged, or severely discolored. They serve as protective shields for weakened or compromised teeth and can enhance the aesthetics of misshapen, stained, or slightly misaligned teeth. Dental crowns provide strength and protection to damaged teeth, reducing the risk of further harm. They are particularly effective in restoring teeth with extensive fillings, cracks, chips, or fractures.

Dental Crown Care Instructions

To maintain the longevity of your dental crown, avoid chewing on hard foods and using your teeth to open packages or bottles. Additionally, be cautious with extremely hot or cold foods and beverages, as they may affect your crown.

After eating, remember to brush your teeth, gums, and tongue, and don't forget to floss. Although dental crowns offer protection, cavities can still develop, so regular checkups are recommended for prompt treatment if necessary.

Our dental crowns are carefully color-matched to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.
